Juventus are reportedly plotting to open talks with David de Gea in January and poach him on a free next summer.

The Manchester United shot-stopper, 28, has entered into the final year of his current contract and the Red Devils have failed to tie him down to a new deal.

According to the Daily Express, the Serie A champions are keen to enter into negotiations with De Gea in the New Year and snap him up on a free at the end of the season.

The Old Lady have become known for making some sensational free summer signings in recent years.

And Juventus heavily reinforced their squad with the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot arriving at the club on a free this summer.

De Gea, who was linked with Paris Saint-Germain this summer, was heavily criticised last season after his form tumbled at Old Trafford last season.

But the Spain international has also been criticised for his mistakes in the current campaign, with his howler against Crystal Palace handing United a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford last month.

Andy Gray also blasted De Gea for his performance against Southampton before the international break, saying that he was at fault for United dropping points in the 1-1 draw.

He said on beIN Sports: "It's right at him.

"If it's to the side of him, okay, I get that but it was pretty much straight at him.

"It wasn't like it was a fierce shot, just a little glancing header from a corner.

"There wasn't a great deal of pace on the ball. David de Gea, in my opinion, is miles good enough to have dealt with that with a catch."

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke about De Gea's future back in July and had hinted that the Spaniard was close to agreeing to new terms with the club.

"Yeah, he will play tomorrow [in the friendly against Leeds]," he said at the time.

"And hopefully we can agree [a new contract] with David, as I've said a few times.

"I think that'll be up to David and the club to announce if that happens. If and when."

De Gea was also on the bench for Spain's 2-1 victory over Romania in their Euro 2020 qualifying match on Thursday, with Robert Moreno starting Kepa Arrizabalaga ahead of the United shot-stopper.

The Red Devils will resume their Premier League campaign next Saturday when they host Leicester City at Old Trafford.

Will De Gea leave United in the summer?
