Lionel Messi's best year of sporting performance came in 2012 when he hit 91 goals and 29 assists in just 69 games for club and country.
But nine years on, his 2021 is going under the radar somewhat. Although Barcelona haven't been all that great this term and were knocked out of the Champions League at the round of 16, Messi has been breathtakingly brilliant since the turn of the year.
Having tried to leave the club in the summer, Messi did start the season slowly by his standards and it took him until November to score his open play goal of the season after 1027 minutes of action.

But in the past three months, the six-time Ballon d'Or winner has been his usual irresistible self.
In 2021, he has 21 goals and assists to his name and this compilation from @CompsLeonaldo, aptly set to Travis Scott's 'Highest in the Room', proves that talk of him slowing down is an absolute myth.
The 33-year-old is still completely running the show for Barca, scoring and assisting left, right and centre.

The new guard of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland are getting a lot of plaudits of late but Messi is still out here doing what he does.
His levels have not dropped in the slightest and even from just a two minute clip, fans have been left in awe by what Messi has been producing on the pitch.
