Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting And Xherdan Shaqiri Playing In The Champions League Proves How Weird Football Is

Quite a six months for the pair...

Eric-Maxim Choupo Moting and Xherdan Shaqiri are evidence that literally anything can happen in football and that you should always chase your dreams.

The pair were both part of the Stoke City side that finished 19th in the Premier League last season, garnering just 33 points from 38 games and subsequently dropping back down to the second tier after a 10-year stay in the top flight.

Neither Choupo-Moting or Shaqiri were ever going to stick around in the Championship but we don't think many people will have predicted both to have come up against one other in the Champions League six months on from suffering relegation.

Shaqiri, who moved to Liverpool for a £13.5 million fee, came on as a substitute in the thrilling 3-2 win over Paris Saint-Germain last night.

But Choupo-Moting somehow also got himself a massive move and he too took to the Anfield pitch, replacing Angel Di Maria in the 80th minute after linking up with Thomas Tuchel for the second time.

Their Champions League cameos came a year to the day that the Potters were beaten 2-0 by Bristol City in the Carabao Cup.

Here's the pick of the reaction to two ex Stoke players coming up against one other in club football's biggest competition:

The duo's last employers, meanwhile, were also in action last night. Gary Rowett's side ran out 1-0 winners over Swansea City at the bet365 stadium.

Badou Ndiaye, still contracted to Stoke, turned out for Galatasaray as they recorded a 3-0 victory over a Lokomotiv Moscow that featured Grzegorz Krychowiak, another player relegated last term.

Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring for Liverpool last night, while Nacer Chadli, now at Monaco, was also playing under the lights.
