"After careful consideration and following discussions with the club, I feel it is the right time for me to step down at the end of the season." Wenger said in a statement on Arsenal's official website.

"I am grateful for having had the privilege to serve the club for so many memorable years. I managed the club with full commitment and integrity."

Former players and fans alike have been paying to tribute to the Frenchman, who has had a tough time in the last few years but was revolutionary for English football and has 10 major trophies to his name in these shores.

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas was handed his professional debut by Wenger as a 16-year old in 2003 and spent eight years under his stewardship, some even as his captain.
