Jamie Carragher laid into Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof following last night's 3-0 loss to Spurs at Old Trafford.

The Swede found himself on the bench following the horror show he and Eric Bailly conjured up against Brighton, but entered the fray in the second half after Phil Jones was forced off with an injury.

Lindelof came on at the hour mark but quickly brought even more nervousness into the backline and nearly gifted Spurs a goal when his under-hit back-pass was collected by Dele Alli, but his blushes were spared by David De Gea.

The former Benfica man is now in his second season at United following his big move but Carragher doesn't think the 24-year old has what it takes to play at this level - even saying he feels sorry for him.

"I can't really criticise Lindelof because it gets to the stage that he's so far out of his depth that you start to feel sorry for him," he said on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

"Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have been playing for a long time, and it [the mistakes] shouldn't be happening at this level.

"There's a serious lack of quality, if you've spent £400m on a squad. How do you lose 3-0? That's a team that looks like it still needs £200m spent on it."

Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, was asked whether he knows what his best defence is and said his recent rotation shows that he doesn't.

"No," Mourinho responded, as per The Manchester Evening News.

"Because in the first game Lindelof and Bailly, now Jones and Smalling but now Jones is injured and in the next match will be Smalling with another one and when Marcos Rojo comes he will also be an option and I don't know my best back four."
