Eric Cantona Wants An Unexpected Player To Be Manchester United's Next Number Seven

He's a huge fan

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has an interesting suggestion for who should wear the club's iconic number seven jersey, with Argentine midfielder Javier Pastore put forward.

Cantona wore the fabled squad number during his time at Old Trafford, and the likes of David Beckham, George Best and Cristiano Ronaldo have also been previous incumbents, but the no.7 current sits vacant.

It was last worn by Angel Di Maria during his failed spell with the Red Devils and Cantona would like to see another Argentine take it next.

Currently in the UK to promote his new book, the enigmatic Frenchman appeared on Full Time Devils, where he insisted Pastore would be the perfect man to inherit the no.7 - even ahead of Antoine Griezmann:

When asked about his old squad number, he said: "I love Pastore who plays for Paris [Saint-Germain] but he doesn't play.

"They have two great players - Pastore and [Hatem] Ben Arfa - and none of them play.

"Pastore is very special he surprises you every time he touches the ball, he will surprise you and give the ball to someone that no one saw.

"He surprises all the fans. I think he's a great player. He plays for Argentina, which is a big country, but he doesn't play for Paris which is a small club."

PSG didn't wait too long to respond to Cantona's 'small club' jibe, however, responding with the below tweet in which they referenced one of the Frenchman's most famous quotes:

The Ligue Un leaders tweeted, "« When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think :fish: will be thrown into the sea" which is of course a reference to the quote Cantona dropped on a room of perplexed journalists at a 1995 press conference in which he addressed the media after successfully winning an appeal against a two week prison sentence for attacking a fan during a Premier League game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Pastore has been linked with Sevilla recently, after losing his starting spot with PSG - but could he be United's next hero?
