Italian veteran Gianluigi Buffon has been linked with a stunning return to Serie A this summer.

The Juventus legend, 41, was axed at Paris Saint-Germain after one season and has been on the hunt for a new club.

According to Sky Sport Italia's Gianluca Di Marzio, Atalanta would be interested in snapping up Buffon in the transfer window.

And the Italian side believe that they could tempt the shot-stopping superstar, who has been linked with Barcelona, with the offer of playing in the Champions League.

Gian Piero Gasperini's men completed a stunning campaign that saw them finish third in Serie A.

But Di Marzio has said that Porto remain the favourites to sign the PSG star.

The Portuguese side have been linked with him in recent weeks as a potential successor to Iker Casillas, who suffered a heart attack in May and who is expected to hang up his boots this summer.

But Buffon could snub the offer from Porto and make a return back home to Italy instead.

Parma, which is where the World Cup winner started his career, have also shown interest in re-signing their former player.

While Buffon has not hinted at retirement from football, not everyone is keen to see him prolong his career.

Former Sampdoria and Inter Milan shot-stopper Guido Pagliuca believes that it's time for Buffon to retire from football.

"The best 'keeper of the last 20 years? Buffon. The most consistent and complete," the 52-year-old Italian told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"And he has won more. He lived through difficult moments and he got back up again.

"As a great friend of his, I suggest that he have respect for his immense career.

"Continuing is a risk. And it is sad to make the end of [Francesco] Totti, seeing the matches off the bench. I advise him to retire here."

Which club should Buffon move to in the summer?
