Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has dismissed comparisons made between Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo by suggesting that the Manchester United new boy is more like Paul Scholes.

The 25-year-old Portuguese midfielder was snapped up from Sporting CP on a five-and-a-half-year deal, with the transfer reportedly worth up to £68m.

But Fernandes, who was heavily linked with United last summer, has high expectations placed on his shoulders after comparisons made with Juventus superstar Ronaldo.

However, Solskjaer has made a bold claim that the former Sporting CP star is more like United legend Paul Scholes than Ronaldo.

The United manager said ahead of the Wolves clash: "Cristiano is unique. We hope that Bruno will have a fantastic career at Man United, but to start comparing him with Cristiano isn't fair on the boy.

"He is a goal-scoring and assisting midfielder, a little bit like Paul Scholes. He can strike a ball fantastically.

"He has got such a wonderful technique, but he also is going to get assists from set-plays and from his range of passes.

"He is a similar type to Scholesy -- fiery, passionate, hates losing and he's got the same number on the back of the shirt.

"I think he is another piece in the jigsaw. I'm sure he will give us that X-factor we've been missing at times this year."

Fernandes plays alongside Ronaldo at international level, but the Red Devils new boy revealed that he spoke to the ex-United star before he completed his move to Old Trafford.

"I talked about Manchester United with Cristiano," he said.

"He just said good things about United. He said he started living his dream here and he started being a really good player here.

"I think he is happy with my transfer and I also talked with Ole and he said he asked Cristiano about me and he said good things about me, which is good."

United legend Rio Ferdinand revealed that former teammates Nani and Ronaldo told him what he could expect to see from a player like Fernandes.

Solskjaer's men will welcome Wolves to Old Trafford today for a 5:30pm UK kick-off.
