Brest goalkeeper Gautier Larsonneur has become a viral sensation after nearly scoring the most outrageous own goal this evening.

The 23-year-old kept a clean sheet as his side ran out 2-0 winners at home to Nice but he could not have been any closer to accidentally getting on the scoresheet in the first half.

After receiving a back-pass that he slightly miscontrolled, Larsonneur tried to play the ball out to is full-back and got it horribly wrong.

The goalkeeper almost smashed the ball in his own net, seeing the ball cannon off the post and straight into the path of the opposition striker.

Luckily for him, a defender got back in to defend the rebound and the ball ended up in his grateful clutches to signal the end of the mad moment.

BT Sport tweeted footage of the absolute absurdity that ensued live on their channel, with Larsonneur's facial expression just priceless.

It would have been a shoo-in for the best/worst own goal of the year even this early into 2021.

There have, however, been a few belters in recent times. Dejan Lovren, now playing for Zenit St Petersburg in Russia, chested one past his own goalkeeper a few weeks back in hilarious fashion.

And who can forget West Brom midfielder Romaine Sawyers putting through his own net against Leeds United at the Hawthorns.
