Football is set to lose one of the coolest midfielders as Xabi Alonso has just announced his retirement from football after confirming his decision through social media.

The 35-year-old starred for Bayern Munich as they inflicted yet another humiliating defeat on Arsenal, thrashing them 5-1 on Tuesday night following their identical scoreline in Germany.

But despite performing heroics, Alonso is set to call time on his illustrious career at the end of the season. And what better way to commemorate his career than by reliving his audacious 70-yard screamer against Luton while playing for Liverpool.

Enjoy his brilliance below:

The midfield maestro has enjoyed spells at Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, winning the lot. Holding aloft the UEFA Champions League with both Real (2013/2014) and Liverpool (2004/2005).

Not to mention other major silverware from La Liga's, Bundesliga's and FA Cup's.

He posted a picture of him waving goodbye accompanied with the words; "Lived it. Loved it. Farewell beautiful game."

We may never see his like again, so make the most of the luxurious Spaniard for the next few months.

Farewell, Xabi. You'll be missed.
