Barcelona youngster Moussa Wague is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines as a result of a brutal collision with the goalpost.

The 22-year-old has been on loan at PAOK in the Greek Super League but his campaign has been cut short after he shattered his knee in a game against Aris last week.

Wague got back into make a sensational goal-line clearance to stop Aris going 2-0 up in the 60th minute but his inspired piece of defending came at a damaging and painful cost.

His momentum saw him crash into the post, his knee colliding with the metal at a sickening impact and forcing the Senegal international to be stretchered off.

The right-back has had surgery on his knee and will now remain in Barcelona for around nine months before he can return to action.

A statement from the Blaugrana read: "FC Barcelona player Moussa Wague, on loan this season to PAOK Salonika, has successfully undergone an operation this Saturday morning to repair and reconstruct patellar ligament in his right knee.

"The operation was performed by Dr Ramon Cugat under supervision of the FC Barcelona medical team.

"The Senegalese footballer has also ruptured posterior cruciate ligaments and has undergone conservative treatment.

"He will be out of action for an estimated nine months, and will remain in Barcelona for the recovery period."

Wague joined Barcelona from Belgian side Eupen for a fee of €5 million in August 2018. In April 2019, he made his La Liga debut against Huesca in what was the first of six competitive appearances.
