Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his board of directors have resigned, according to stunning reports in Spain.

Bartomeu has stepped down from his position rather than await a fans' vote of confidence on his future at the club.

His board of directors have also resigned and an election will be scheduled to appoint a new president.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, he said: "I am communicating my resignation from my position of president, along with my entire board of directors.

"This is a thought out and relaxed decision, agreed with all my fellow directors."

Bartomeu was involved in a war with Lionel Messi as the 57-year-old refused to let the club captain leave the Camp Nou during the summer transfer window.

Messi attempted to secure a move away from Barcelona to reunite with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

However, he decided to see out the remainder of his contract to avoid taking his side to court.

Bartomeu came under fire for the way in which he handled the situation.

He leaves Barcelona after six years as president.

The Catalan giants have endured a difficult start to the new season after a disastrous campaign last season.

They've already lost two La Liga games including a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid last weekend.

Bartomeu's resignation comes 24 hours before they resume their Champions League campaign at Juventus.
