An army of Liverpool fans have descended into Rome ahead of the Champions League semi-final second leg, with hooligans reportedly attacking them.

Despite initial fears about safety following the unsavoury scenes at Liverpool, around 5,000 supporters have made the trip to the Italian capital.

The semi-final first leg was marred after AS Roma fans attacked their Liverpool counterparts before kick-off.

A section of the visitors ambushed the home fans with 'belts' and 'batons' outside a pub, seriously injuring Irishman Sean Cox who remains in hospital with head injuries.

The AS Roma team have subsequently paid tribute to him during training, donning 'Forza Sean' t-shirts.

But, last night, an incident occurred which included Liverpool fans being attacked by AS Roma hooligans who were carrying 'metal bars'.

A Liverpool fan gives a detailed account of the trouble.

"We got a few hundred yards from the hotel, which is on Violo del Gallo, and two scooters came out of nowhere," he said via Standard.

"The two passengers on the back got off and attacked us. One had a small metal bar. We tried to fight back but the drivers got off. We ran off."

No arrests have been made.

Though, the distribution of police officers is the most seen for a football match in Rome.

"Two thousand officers have been deployed, but we can't be everywhere," said a officer.

"This is the largest number ever seen for a football match in Rome, but the ultras will still strike."

Meanwhile, AS Roma need to overturn a three-goal deficit to secure a spot in the Champions League final following Liverpool's 5-2 victory, last week.

It won't be the first time.

The Serie A outfit dumped out Barcelona in the quarter-final courtesy of a stunning comeback.
