Rio Ferdinand has revealed how Thierry Henry made Ruud van Nistelrooy 'sad' at Manchester United.

Van Nistelrooy had a fierce on-field rivalry with Henry to the point that he would be devastated if the legendary Frenchman scored for the Gunners.

The prolific Dutchman was obsessed over Henry's statistics and used to come in the changing room after a game unhappy if the Arsenal star had improved his goal scoring figures.

"You've had all these rivalries over the years, great players need great rivalries. They need rivalries. They should be looking at each other," Ferdinand reveals.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy used to come in changing room after a game, trust me, we're trying to win the league, we've beat someone 3-1 or 4-1, he's scored one goal, he'll come in and look up to the TV [shake his head] and go 'ohh'.

"He sits down, [we ask] 'Ruud, are you alright, what's wrong?'. And he'll reply, 'nothing, nothing'.

"Then someone will go, 'Thierry has scored two today, Ruud has only scored one, so he's a goal behind now.'

"And he's sitting there devastated, and you can see it. I used to sit there, and this this guy is mad, we just won 3-1, he's scored a banger, set someone up as well, and he's disappointed."

Van Nistelrooy spent five seasons at Old Trafford and scored goals at an alarming rate, though he only beat Henry once to the Premier League Golden Boot.

He pipped his counterpart to the prestigious prize by one goal in the 2002/03 season.

Henry, on the other hand, won an unprecedented four Premier League Golden Boot awards during his storied spell at Arsenal.

Van Nistelrooy, meanwhile, bagged an impressive 21 league goals in his final campaign in England's top flight before sealing a move to Real Madrid.
