Anthony Martial received vile racist abuse on social media after Manchester United's 1-1 draw against West Brom.

The Frenchman played 66 minutes at the Hawthorns but after the game he was subjected to a number of awful messages on social media.

His photos were spammed with racist messages and symbols, as well as the N-word being used.

This was the second time in recent times Martial has had to deal with such horrendous abuse, with both he and Axel Tuanzebe targeted following the home defeat to Sheffield United last month.

Teammate Marcus Rashford, along with Southampton's Alex Jankiewicz and Swansea's Yan Dhana, have also been racially abused.

Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, said they would be imposing tougher sanctions on despicable comments of this nature and the abuse has opened up conversations as to whether there needs to be more thorough checks for users set up accounts online.

After the abuse to Martial and Tuanzebe in January, United issued a strong statement.

"Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted by the racial abuse received by players via social media after last night's game," the club said.

"We utterly condemn it and it is encouraging to see other fans condemn this on social media also.

"Identifying these anonymous mindless idiots remains problematic. We urge social media platforms and regulatory authorities to strengthen measures to prevent this kind of behaviour."

The PFA offered their support and encouraged any other player who suffers racial abuse to press charges.
