Alvaro Morata Endured A Miserable International Break

Alvaro Morata Endured A Miserable International Break

Will he make Spain's World Cup squad?

Alvaro Morata's international break couldn't have gone much worse, to be honest.

After a poor run of form in which he's scored just once since the turn of the year, the Chelsea striker was dropped from Julen Lopetegui's squad for games against Germany and Argentina and it looks like he might struggle to get back in the mix in time for the World Cup.

Not only is he seriously out of sorts at the moment, all the players rivalling him for a spot in Russia performed during the international break.

Valencia's Rodrigo scored a lovely goal in the 1-1 draw with Germany in Dusseldorf, before Diego Costa and Iago Aspas both played a half each and struck one apiece in the 6-1 demolition of Argentina at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Thus, Morata is right at the back of the queue when it comes to La Roja's striking options and he'll need to have a drastic upturn in fortunes if he is to force his way back into Lopetegui's plans.

He did find the net in the FA Cup game against Leicester City, taking his tally to 13 for the season, but he'll need to be on it big-time between now and the end of the season. However, with Olivier Giroud, and even Eden Hazard preferred by Antonio Conte for the striker berth, it looks a difficult task.

He's not alone in being overlooked from the Spain squad though, as his club colleagues Cesc Fabregas and Pedro were both not included for the last two fixtures.

When you can afford to leave out players of that ilk, you know your squad depth is different gravy.
