Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur will trigger Toby Alderweireld's extension clause.

The 29-year-old defender was a target for Manchester United in the summer, but executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was unwilling to meet the Belgian's £60m price tag.

The Spurs boss does not want to lose the former Ajax and Atlético Madrid player, with his extension keeping him at the London club until 2020.

"Yes, for sure. It is obvious. It is the same situation as Jan [Vertonghen]," he said.

However, Tottenham are well aware of the risks that come with his extension.

According to the Evening Standard, Alderweireld has a £25m release clause that will last up until the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.

While Ole Gunnar Solskjær has replaced former United boss José Mourinho as caretaker manager until the end of the season, the 45-year-old Norwegian will have the club's financial backing in the January transfer window.

Woodward might be tempted to rekindle United's interest in Alderweireld if the asking price becomes £25m.
