Alan Shearer believes Manchester United hot-shot Mason Greenwood has the potential to break his Premier League goals record.

The former England striker has been atop of the goalscoring charts for years now after firing in a ridiculous 260 goals for Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and his beloved Newcastle United.

Wayne Rooney has got closest to Shearer, ending up on 208 after a decorated Premier League career, but it remains to be seen if Shearer will be knocked off his perch in the future.

However, the man himself has surprisingly tipped 18-year old Greenwood to usurp him.

The youngster notched his 10th Premier League goal in the 1-1 draw with West Ham United, meaning he has become the first teenager reached double figures in the English top flight since Rooney.

And while he still needs more than 250 to be the league's top scorer, Greenwood has made a huge impression of Shearer, who thinks he's the real deal.

Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, Shearer said: "A potential superstar. I respect the power, left foot, right foot, and the way he gets his shot away early, he doesn't give the keeper a chance to set himself.

"Whether it's near-post or far-post. Everything is power, head down and hit it as hard as you can.

"I was taught at Southampton, by my old youth coach Dave Merrington, to concentrate on that right foot and make it unstoppable.

"Now, he can do it with his left or right foot. He gets it away early and the goalkeepers have no chance. Tonight was exactly the same. Watch how he takes it early.

"I think in 12 or 13 years time, we could be talking about a Premier League record goalscorer.

"I know there's so many things that can happen in someone's career. But I think he's that good."

In the past, Shearer has pinpointed Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero as the two names who could break his long-standing record but he's now paid Greenwood a monumental compliment.

The two-footed United youth product made his 50th appearance for the club last night and has hit a highly impressive 17 goals in all competitions this term.
