Alan Shearer Claims England Only Have One World Class Player

"He's one of the best in the world in his position."

Former England captain Alan Shearer doesn't believe Roy Hodgson has any world class players at his disposal for the European Championships next month. Except Joe Hart.

Despite not boasting the strongest squad, Shearer still thinks the Three Lions can do well in France.

"Joe Hart's one of the best in the world in his position.

"But I don't think we have any other world-class players at the minute, no."

"That doesn't mean we cannot do well. I've seen in tournaments teams with world-class players who haven't achieved anything.

"So you don't necessarily need world-class players. They can all be excellent. But I'm not sure about world class."

When it comes to European Championships, it's safe to say that Shearer knows a thing or two about what it takes to advance to the latter stages of the tournament, having been an integral part of Terry Venables' team that came so close to making the final in 1996, suffering a heart breaking penalty shoot-out defeat to Germany in the semi-finals. The Newcastle United legend would score five goals during that tournament, winning the Golden Boot in the process.

The class of '96 boasted plenty of world class talent, with the likes of Shearer, Gascoigne, Seaman and Adams helping the Three Lions towards their last great tournament showing. Twenty years and countless disappointments later, most England fans would happily settle for a semi-final exit in France, this Summer.
