Ajax could be ready to make a move for Martin Ødegaard after Real Madrid have reportedly opened the door for an offer to be submitted.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has been out on loan at Vitesse and had a stellar outing in the Eredivisie this season.

Ajax had been linked with Ødegaard last month and Los Blancos were holding out for over €20m for the player.

According to De Telegraaf, Ajax director of football Marc Overmars felt that the price tag was too high as a starting bid, but with the reigning Champions League holders now changing their stance on Ødegaard, the Eredivisie side's uppers are ready to sanction the move.

Ødegaard's exit at Madrid would happen due to the fact that he doesn't fit in Zinedine Zidane's plans for Los Blancos next season, the Dutch newspaper added.

The former Strømsgodset player would be the ideal fit for Ajax, according to Vitesse's Thulani Serero.

The 29-year-old midfielder, who previously played for Ajax, praised his current teammate and suggested that his former employers should make a move for Ødegaard.

"[Ødegaard] can handle it," he said.

"If I were Ajax, I would try to buy [him], because Martin is a great football player."

Ødegaard is well aware of the interest from the Eredivisie title-challenging side and he offered a classy response when he was asked about it last month.

"I try not to pay attention to it. I have to play well and score goals. If I do, clubs will watch you and a decision will be made in the summer where I will play. Ajax is a good club," he told De Telegraaf at the time.

"I think that's too much money. I do not think that I have to cost so much money. But my agent talks to the people in Madrid and I hear later what comes from that."

Ajax would no doubt welcome Ødegaard into their ranks, especially as Frenkie de Jong will leave for Barcelona in the summer and other European clubs will be eyeing up their talent after their phenomenal season.

Ajax are at the top of the Eredivisie and are three points clear of PSV Eindhoven, though the latter have played one match fewer than their title-challenging rivals.

Erik ten Hag's men will also be turning their attention to their upcoming first-leg Champions League semi-final clash with Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the month.

Should Ødegaard sign for Ajax in the summer?
