A slew of top players plying their trade in Europe opted out by heading to the Far East.
Huge contracts and wage packets was enough to ditch top flight European football for the fledgling Chinese Super League.

But he's no longer with Guangzhou Evergrande who have officially released him. The club signed him for €42 million in 2016 from Atletico Madrid.
Martinez rose to prominence following his stint with FC Porto. He bagged 20 goals in the Portuguese league in three consecutive seasons before venturing to the La Liga.

Despite reported interest from Manchester United and Chelsea.
Martinez's spell in China was, ultimately, miserable. He only played 16 games in all competitions while scoring just four goals in two years. Though, in fairness, he was blighted with several injuries.
The writing was on the wall for Martinez after he was snubbed of a place in the clubs 31-man squad for the new season.
