If you're a Manchester United fan of a certain age, chances are you remember hearing about Zoran Tosic and how he was destined to be the next big thing.

The former Serbia international was snapped up in a £6.9 million deal from Partizan back in 2009.

Tosic was just 21-years-old at the time but seen as one for the future in a United side that was brimming with talent.

Sir Alex Ferguson thrusted him straight into the spotlight and he made his debut in an FA Cup fourth round clash with Tottenham Hotspur, replacing Cristiano Ronaldo from the bench. No pressure there.

Tosic was also handed the number 14 shirt too, which signalled he was going to be part of the first-team setup going forward.

He would only make two more appearances in the rest of his debut campaign however and they were both off the bench.

Ferguson believed in Tosic's ability, but the man himself thinks he made the step up to Premier League football far too soon.

He told the Daily Record back in 2012: "It was such an exciting moment to go there and to meet Sir Alex. I had grown up as a United fan so to be working for the man who had brought so much success to the club was just unbelievable.

"However, there is a big difference between the Serbian and English league and when I arrived in Manchester I discovered I was not yet ready for that level.

"I spoke with Sir Alex many times and he kept telling me I had quality and just had to keep working hard."

Tosic was limited to two League Cup appearances in his second campaign and decided a loan move would be best for his development.

Upon Tosic's return in 2010, he chose to make a permanent move to CSKA Moscow and it is a decision he regularly thinks about.

He continued: "I wanted to play more games so went to Koln in Germany on loan and had a great six months there.

"When I came back to Manchester I was expecting to play more games for United but it didn’t happen. In the end I wasn’t sure I was going to get the chance I felt I deserved so decided to change club.

"Even now I am always thinking about that moment. Maybe I shouldn’t have been so quick and should have worked longer to show Sir Alex.

"Maybe I should have stayed and fought for my place. This was Man United after all."

Now 35, Tosic plays for Kazakhstan outfit Tobol Kostanay and he scored the winner in their Europa Conference League second round qualifier against Lincoln Red Imps on Tuesday.
