Lionel Messi Once Used The Referee To Help Him Turn A Defender

Lionel Messi can be almost impossible to defend against and just when you think you've got it right, he can embarrass you with the help of the referee.

There isn't much Messi can't do with a football, even when it's by accident. This week he became South America's all time top goal scorer with a pass, very impressive.

It was a really good pass in fairness, and one that should have resulted in a brilliant assist but instead became a milestone goal for the 34-year-old.

Later in the same game, a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay, the little maestro managed to turn seven defenders at once on the way to setting up another goal.

It's not always about the amount of players you turn though as how you do it, which Carles Planas found out the hard way in February 2016.

During Barcelona's 6-1 win over Celta Vigo, the six time Ballon d'Or winner showed off incredible cunning as he used the referee to trick the defender, turn him, and continue his run, sprinting away from Planas who now had the ref in his way.

Messi is in line to win the Ballon d'Or for the seventh time in his career, after helping Argentina to win the Copa America this year.

The PSG forward has talked up the chances of his two fellow forwards, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, to win the award instead of him.

He recently explained the biggest difference between his new trio and the legendary one at Barcelona, when he played with Neymar, and Luis Suarez was their third man.

"Age, first of all! We were young when we started to play with Ney," the former Barca man said.

"Now, the young one is Kylian. And then Kylian and Luis are two very different players. Luis is a pure number 9, a lone striker, who's particularly good in the box and is used to scoring lots of goals.

"Kylian likes to be on the ball more, he's a very strong and extremely rapid player, who kills you if you leave any space and scores a lot as well.

"They are both spectacular players, but with very different qualities."
