Rio Ferdinand hit the headlines for his controversial comments about Newcastle United on Saturday evening but lost amongst it all was his suggestion to Jurgen Klopp as to how Liverpool can win the Premier League.

Liverpool have been pretty brilliant so far this season as Jurgen Klopp's side attempt to end the hoodoo that has been standing over the Reds' since the Premier League started, not winning the league.

It took till the beginning of the year for Liverpool to lose a game in the league and it took champions Manchester City to beat them, and they only did by 1.2 cms.

Klopp's side then lost their next game, an FA Cup third round fixture vs Wolves, and the alarm bells started ringing ahead of the game with Brighton on Saturday.

The Reds won that 1-0 to put minds at ease and speaking after the game on BT Sport Rio Ferdinand explained the tactic that Sir Alex Ferguson employed to keep confidence up that Klopp should use, saying:

"I think Jurgen Klopp it's important he actually tries to take the focus off of the history. That will be a big burden on their shoulders - if it's allowed to be.

"When I was fortunate enough to be in a changing room with Sir Alex Ferguson, in times of need when the pressure is on, someone was chasing or when Liverpool or Chelsea were just ahead of us, he would find something we could hook into.

"It wouldn't be obvious but it would be something about us a lot of the time - what we were good at, why we're here.

"It would be little gems that he would put into your mind as an individual and it grew as a collective belief that you just cling on to.

"Sometimes it just needs one performance to shut everyone up.

"If Liverpool go out and put in a massive performance against one of the big teams, they put them to sleep and win three or four-nil, then you get the momentum again."

Momentum and confidence were certainly the topics of the day as Liverpool did very well to hold onto their 1-0 lead, earned through Mo Salah's penalty.

There's no doubt that the Premier League leaders will take confidence from keeping a clean sheet and getting back to winning ways against Chris Hughton's team.

Will Klopp finally end the title drought at Anfield?
