Modric overtook Darijo Srna to become Croatia's most capped player of all time, and his teammates gave him a lovely moment after the game.

Luka Modric wasn't even bothering to hold back any tears as he got emotional when his teammates gave him a standing ovation for becoming Croatia's most capped player.

Croatia got their World Cup qualifying campaign back on track on Saturday night against Cyprus, with a 1-0 win making up for their loss against Slovenia earlier in the week.

Whilst the three points was the most important thing on the pitch, off the pitch the players were able to celebrate Modric's achievement.

The Real Madrid midfielder became the country's most capped player by making his 135th appearance for the national team, overtaking Darijo Srna's previous record of 134.

After the match his teammates gave the player a standing ovation and he was presented with a cake with the number 135 iced into it and Modric was very emotional.

Reaching the landmark also leaves the 35-year-old in joint 70th on the list of all time most international caps in men's football, with Oman's Ali Al-Habsi, Kuwait's Waleed Ali and Honduras' Noel Valladares all alongside him.

Should he win his 136th cap on Tuesday against Malta then he'll jump up another place on the all time list and go level with Fabio Cannavaro and Alexis Sanchez.

The former Spurs midfielder is understandably a legend for the national team. As well as being their record cap maker, Modric also helped lead them to the World Cup final in 2018.

His performances in Russia earned him the Golden Ball award as best player and after winning the Champions League with Real Madrid in the same year he won the Ballon d'Or.

The team are already in a battle to reach the finals in Qatar in 20 months time, after losing their first qualifier to Slovenia.

Russia have won both their games, Croatia and Slovenia have three points each and Slovakia have two points, with only top place guaranteed a place in the Middle East.
