The invention and rise of social media is probably the biggest difference in football since the men who are retiring now have faced since becoming footballers and one of them has deleted all his online activity upon retiring.

Nowadays most of us couldn't live without social media, which is a bloody good job for those of us whose incomes rely on it, and that's no different for footballers who give us an insight into their lives, and no doubt slide into a few DMs.

You'd have thought that managers and clubs wouldn't be too happy with their players tweeting and the like and rather wait till they were retired until getting into that kind of thing.

Well one of Barcelona's most important players of recent years has just retired and deleted all his social media presence as part of a promise to spend more time with his family.

After finishing his career with six La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues, a World Cup, a European Championships, a whole host of other tournaments and five Zamora trophies, Barcelona legend Victor Valdes decided to call it a day and fans paid tribute to him, ironically on social media:

He's had one hell of a career and, as well as his style of play being a huge contributing factor towards it, he had one of the best views of Pep Guardiola's tiki taka revolution at Barcelona.

What player!
