Kammy Talks Up England's Chances At Euro 2016

Will it be an unbelievable summer?

So that's it, we know who will be joining Roy Hodgson and Gary Neville on the plane to France in under a week. Marcus Rashford completes his story of unknown to member of an England squad at a tournament in just three months and Danny Drinkwater misses out despite winning the Premier League. But how will England do at the tournament?

Well who better to ask than the man who makes Saturday 3pm kick-offs worth watching when you aren't at the match to watch. We asked Chris "Kammy" Kamara to tell us about England's chances at the Euros in France.

England open their Euro campaign against Russia on June 11th before games against Wales and Slovakia and with the top three going through in four of the six groups Roy Hodgson's side would really have to mess up to not go through to the last 16. Kammy believes that their chances are better than that, ranking the Three Lions in the top four teams in the tournament:

"We can win the Euros, we've got a really good chance. It won't be easy. I believe the best four teams on paper are us, Belgium, France and Germany. Spain aren't the force they once were but they would be fifth. Any of those top four would be in with a great chance."

The Sky Sports Soccer Saturday match reporter revealed that England's poor performance at the World Cup in 2014 had put him off heading across the Channel for this summer's tournament but the exciting talent available had changed his mind:

"I've been going to these tournaments for years but I vowed after the World Cup [in Brazil] that I wouldn't be going again. I was out there and people spent their life savings to go out to the Costa Rica match and we were already knocked out.

"But then we get to this tournament and I'm full of optimism again. I don't want to not be there. When I look at the attacking prowess it makes me feel like we have got a chance, we've got plenty of goals. I'm not getting carried away because you can never let yourself getting carried away with England."

Of course it's not all perfect for the national side with a lack of quality in defence the main worry for Hodgson and the fans. Kamara reckons that Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill will be the main pairing at centre back because of John Stones lack of form but that the former Fulham boss could yet get the best out of the Everton player:

The only position that we worry about is centre half but if Cahill and Smalling get a partnership working and looking solid that would give us a great chance.

Everything Stones is good at has been destroyed in the last six months. Work on his weaknesses don't mess with his strengths and his strength is bringing the ball out from the back and all of a sudden that's become a problem and losing that confidence on the ball has made the rest of his game look weaker than it was. If Roy can bring it back then he could start but at the moment it's Smalling and Cahill.

Asked what constitutes success, for the side who haven't been past the quarterfinals and into the semis in any tournament since their home Euros in 1996, Kammy believes that getting to the last four would do for Hodgson:

"If we got to the semi-finals it would keep everyone happy. People would at least be able to see an improvement and see we're getting better. I look at the teams; France look fantastic, Germany brilliant. Belgium are the most hyped team that have never won anything and rightly so but they've not done anything. They have to make their mark. They're in a similar position to us in that way."

Despite his obvious passion and love for England none of his home country's matches rank amongst his favourite of all time. He considers the 1970 World Cup final between Brazil and Italy as his favourite of all time. The former Bradford City manager was only 12 at the time of the match and spoke brilliantly about the match that included Carlos Alberto's legendary goal:

My favourite match of all time would be the world cup final in 1970 between Brazil and Italy. I'm a bit nostalgic when it comes to football, I've watched the 1966 World Cup final more than 20 times, people should definitely watch it.

But it doesn't compare to Brazil vs Italy, that Brazil team was just awesome. I was spoilt a little bit, it gave me an illusion as a kid that all football was like that Brazil team.

The skill and performance is just awesome, it's something else. It's my favourite of all time. Every single outfield player apart from one touches the ball in the build up to that goal, it's just sensational.
