They say you shouldn't meet your heroes but not only did Luka Modric meet his he made the guy cry. When the Real Madrid player won The Best FIFA Player of the Year Award that's exactly what he did.

The Croatian has had a great year helping Real Madrid to their third Champions League title in a row and then guiding his country to their first ever World Cup final.

He beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Mo Salah to the award, whose heroics helped their sides to the Champions League final.

During his speech Modric paid tribute to his hero Zvonimir Boban and made the former AC Milan midfielder cry.

In his speech for the former Spurs man said:

"It is a great honour and feeling to stand here with this trophy [the Best award]. The first thing I want say is congratulations to [Mohamed] Salah and Cristiano [Ronaldo] for their great seasons.

"I am sure that in the future, you [Salah and Ronaldo] will have another chance [to win this award].

"This trophy is not just mine but for all my teammates from Real Madrid, my Croatia national teammates, my coaches and my family.

"Thanks to my fans all over the world. I would like to thank those who voted for me.

"I also want to thank my idol, the captain of the Croatia 1998 [World Cup] team and my great inspiration, Zvonimir Boban, who gave us the inspiration that we could do great things in Russia."

Modric switched to Spanish for the end of his speech, adding, "I want to say a few words in Spanish.

"I would like to thank Real Madrid and its fans for and affection and support. This [award] is yours too."

Clearly it's okay to meet you heroes once you've won the award for being the best footballer in the world for the past year, fair play Luka.
