Former World Footballer of the Year Ronaldinho could be facing a 'worst case scenario' after a key witness couldn't appear in court due to Covid-19.

On March 5th the Brazilian was arrested in Paraguay after trying to enter the country using false documents, that claimed he was born in the country, and he has been behind bars ever since.

The former Barca man was initially denied bail as a likely 'flight risk' but now things have got even worse for the 39-year-old after an issue with a key witness.

According to SPORT, Dalia Lopez, the businesswoman who is involved in organising Ronaldinho, and his brother's, trip to Paraguay failed to turn up to court.

The Spanish outlet say that Lopez's lawyer presented a doctor's note because her type two diabetes and high blood pressure makes her a 'high risk' to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Lopez's testimony is crucial to the former player and brother Roberto de Assis as the prosecution claim they got their false documents from the company and should she accept blame then they would be released.

The Sun reports that Ronaldinho's former club Barcelona have also pulled away from supporting the 2002 World Cup winner.

Former teammate Lionel Messi was said to be ready to give support to the man who helped him when he first broke into the first team at the Camp Nou but that has since been 'refuted' by the Argentine's camp.

On March 9th the judge explained that the maximum time for the investigation period is six months, giving the prospect of the former player spending that much time in prison, though it may not take that long.

Appeals for house arrest were rejected because there wasn't enough information on the house that the brothers were meant to be staying in.

The former AC Milan player has still managed to play football whilst being locked behind bars as the prison held a futsal tournament.

He even managed to score as his team won 11-2.
