David de Gea has been voted the best 'keeper in Manchester United's history.

SPORTbible ran a poll asking Twitter users to vote from three choices, which included club legends Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar.

The 28-year-old Spanish shot-stopper was the clear frontrunner with 42 per cent of the vote, while Schmeichel came second with 39 per cent and van der Sar came third with 19 per cent.

Former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson brought the Spain international to Old Trafford from Atlético Madrid in 2011.

While he initially struggled in the Premier League, de Gea dramatically improved during his time in England and has now made 259 appearances for the club.

The former Atlético Madrid 'keeper won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for three years in a row, becoming the first player in the club's history to achieve such a feat.

De Gea, who was named in the 2018 FIFA FIFPro World XI, has won multiple honours with United, including the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and the Europa League.

United caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær has already tipped de Gea to become the greatest 'keeper in the club's history.

"We've had some great keepers at this club and I think he's challenging both Edwin and Peter for the number one spot historically," he said (via BBC Sport).

United's first-choice 'keeper was widely praised by fans for his performance against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, with Watford's Ben Foster coming out to silence de Gea's critics in a brilliant tweet.
