England managers were so inept at working out who was best between Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard that Scholes retired from international football and the other two could only lead England to failure. But do we now have the answer?

There aren't too many debates in football as testing as trying to work out who between Chelsea's Frank Lampard, Manchester United's Paul Scholes and Liverpool's Steven Gerrard was the best midfielder.

Do any of these three make Gazza's ultimate England XI?

All three of them have right to argue they are one of the best midfielders in the Premier League era, all three brought something different to their game, all three won plenty and all three are loved by fans of their own team.

Being of a similar generation and being so important to their own team caused so much debate and it mainly just depends what you're looking for as to who you'd vote for.

Today though the Champions League twitter page decided to find out who their fans prefer and more than 85,000 people voted:

Of course the poll is about which player would make it into your Champions League dream team and that could slightly skew opinions with the Liverpool forward having a huge say in where that title went in 2005.

The former Liverpool captain infamously scored the goal in the group stages against Olympiakos that took them through when elimination looked certain and was then the catalyst for the comeback in Istanbul in the final.

Lampard won the title with Chelsea in 2012 when the Blues beat Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena and did score a penalty in the shoot-out. He also bagged in the 2008 final loss.

Scholes wasn't part of the team who beat Bayern in the final of the 1999 season, when United won the treble, because he was suspended. His goal in 2008 against Barcelona did take them to the final.
