After 22 years with a club that includes seven league titles and a Champions League win you'd have thought that when you announced your retirement they'd be praising you to the heavens but not Bayern Munich, they're actually annoyed at their retiring star.

Last night, before their German Cup win over Wolfsburg, German newspaper Bild reported that Bayern legend Philipp Lahm would be retiring from football at the end of the season.

After the match the 33 year old full back confirmed the reports and also confirmed that despite and offer from the club to become their new Sporting Director he wouldn't be taking the role.

But when the Bundesliga champions should be erecting statues of their club captain they've actually revealed that they aren't happy with him and the way he's gone about announcing his retirement.

In a statement on the club website chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said:

"FC Bayern München is surprised by the approach of Philipp Lahm and his adviser. Uli Hoeneß and I have held open, intensive and constructive talks with Philipp in recent months about a possible position as sporting director of our club.

"...Until yesterday we assumed that there would be a joint announcement on this decision by Philipp Lahm and FC Bayern München."

It does seem a bit ridiculous that the club have put the statement out. Even if they were annoyed at how Lahm went about announcing his decision they really didn't need to react or make their annoyance public.

It's unlikely that the Munich born defender is going to be affected by the statement though and will likely move into a non playing role at the club at the end of the season.

Lahm has won 20 different competitions with the Allianz club and also won the World Cup with Germany in 2014.

Is Lahm the greatest full-back of his generation?
