Sir Alex Ferguson Was So Humiliated By Manchester United He Couldn't Face Anyone At Half Time

The Manchester United legend was sat in the stands as United found themselves 3-0 down in the first 45 minutes in a poor performance.

Sir Alex Ferguson was so humiliated by Manchester United's first half performance that he couldn't face anyone at half-time and instead went to his office to drink wine.

United played local rivals Manchester City in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at Old Trafford on Tuesday night and were 3-0 down by the time the referee gave them some respite after 45 minutes.

Fergie was in attendance and according to the Metro he couldn't face pleasantries at half-time and insteaded headed straight to his office for a glass of red wine, with a 'face like thunder.'

A source confirmed the news to the Mirror, saying, "The directors lounge wasn't a good place to be at half time from a United point of view.

"All Sir Alex wanted to do was go straight to his office. He couldn't face anyone and was determined to be somewhere else, while Mr Woodward just had his head in his hands."

Old Trafford hasn't had much to celebrate in the six and a half years since Fergie decided to hang up his chewing gum and call time on his career.

The Carabao Cup was seen as the best chance of silverware this season and even playing City there was some optimism after United recently beat Pep Guardiola's side in the Premier League.

The chance to win some silverware was soon disappearing as Bernardo Silva opened the scoring after 15 minutes, Riyad Mahrez doubled the lead on 33 minutes and five minutes later an Andreas Pereira own goal made it 3-0.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted the first half was awful after the match, saying, "From their goal until half-time, that is the worst that we have played. From the first goal to half-time we just could not cope with that setback. We were running in between.

"The pressure didn't work and we let them play. Our heads dropped. We just made decisions that we should not do.

"That needed sorting at half-time... Someone needed to take the responsibility and we did that in the second half."

The Red Devils did improve in the second half, with Jesse Lingard being replaced by Nemanja Matic, and Marcus Rashford pulled one back to leave them just about in the tie before the second leg.

There's been many lows since Fergie left his role as manager with one final Premier League title, but it doesn't get much lower than Tuesday night's opening 45 minutes.
