AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini has been voted the best defender of all time.

SPORTbible ran a poll asking football fans to choose from four players: Maldini, Fabio Cannavaro, Carles Puyol and Sergio Ramos.

With more than 30,000 Twitter users submitting their votes, the 50-year-old former Italy international won by a landslide after taking home more than 60 per cent of the vote.

Far, far behind Maldini in second place was Puyol, with Ramos coming in third and Cannavaro finishing in fourth.

Of course, it is worth remembering that the poll only allows four options, but many fans also put forward names that included Franco Baresi, Franz Beckenbauer and Alessandro Nesta.

Maldini spent his entire playing career at Milan and made over 600 appearances for the club.

During his illustrious career, the former Milan star won Serie A seven times, one Coppa Italia, five Supercoppa Italianas, five European Cups/Champions Leagues and five Super Cups.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson previously revealed that he wanted to sign Maldini during his time at Old Trafford, but the one-club legend's father, Cesare Maldini, blocked the move from taking place.

While he might have retired from football, Maldini continues to have an impact on players.

Case in point: AC Milan centre-back Alessio Romagnoli spoke highly about Maldini, mainly for the praise that he received from the I Rossoneri legend.

"It's exciting to wear the band of such an important club, more so for me who is not of the Milan youth sector. I thank Paolo for his compliments and advice," he told Sky Italia.

Agree with Maldini being the best defender in history? If not, who would be your choice?
