Jose Mourinho has only cried after a defeat once in his career

Jose Mourinho, one of football’s finest managers has revealed that he has only cried after a defeat once in his entire career.

The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ is regarded as one of the best managers in football history after winning a huge amount of trophies with different clubs.

In total, he has won 27 trophies across a stunning career that has so far spanned more than 20 years.

Back in May 2022, after leading Roma to the UEFA Conference League title, Mourinho was seen crying tears of joy.

However, Mourinho has only ever cried once after a defeat in his entire managerial career.

Back in 2020, whilst speaking to Spanish news outlet Marca, Mourinho admitted the defeat by Bayern Munich in the 2012 Champions League semi-finals made him cry.

The Portuguese was Real Madrid’s manager at the time and saw three key players miss a penalty during a tense penalty shootout.

Mourinho said: “Unfortunately, that's football. Cristiano, Kaka, Sergio Ramos... three complete monsters of football, there's no doubt about that, but they're also human.

“That night is the only time in my career as a coach that I've cried after a defeat. I remember it well...

“Aitor [Karanka] and I pulled up in front of my house, in the car, crying...It was very hard because we were the best that season.”

Mourinho later revealed to Portuguese TV channel Sic that the defeat against Bayern was the saddest moment of his career.

He said: “If I have to choose the worst moment, it's that elimination with Real Madrid.

“We were the best team in Europe, without a doubt, we won La Liga smashing all the records for points and goals and we would've won that final, I don't have any doubt.”

Mourinho continued: “What was most cruel for me was that in the shoot-out we chose Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Sergio Ramos, they were dead certs from the penalty spot and the guys who missed were those who never miss, it sunk me.”

Mourinho is now chasing more trophies as Roma boss as they are in the Europa League semi-finals, where they will be up against Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen.
