Jordan Henderson Tapped Into His Inner Steven Gerrard Against AC Milan

Henderson gave Liverpool all three points in the Champions League, after Milan had given them a scare in the first half.

Jordan Henderson tapped into the spirit of former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, to earn the Reds a win in their Champions League opener against AC Milan.

Liverpool and Milan had played two epic Champions League finals against each other in 2005 and 2007 but hadn't played since, until Wednesday night.

The two sides met in their opening group game of this season's tournament at Anfield, crazily the first time they'd played at the Reds' home, in an entertaining game.

Jurgen Klopp's side took an early lead thanks to Fikayo Tomori's ninth minute own goal and Mohamed Salah had the chance to double the lead from the spot just five minutes later, but the Egyptian had his spot kick saved.

Things soon turned on their head with the Italians scoring twice in two minutes to take the lead into half time, with Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz scoring in the 42nd and 44th minutes respectively.

It only took three minutes after the break for Salah to make up for his earlier miss, when he made it 2-2 and then came Henderson's brilliant moment.

The Liverpool captain struck a perfectly nice half volley from the edge of the area, after a corner was half cleared, into the back of the net in the 69th minute.

It was the kind of thing that the midfielder's predecessor, Gerrard, would have done, especially to win a game on a midweek night in Europe.

The Rangers' manager was of course the man who kicked off the comeback against the Rossoneri in 2005, when Liverpool won the final in Istanbul on penalties, having been 3-0 down at half time.

The match on Wednesday had an even bigger link to the one 16 years ago, when the Italian's brought on Daniel Maldini in the 83rd minute.

Maldini is the son of club legend Paolo, who of course captained them in the famous night in Istanbul, and two years later when they got revenge.
