Sheffield Wednesday Took The Lead With Beauty After Just 18 Seconds

Sheffield Wednesday Took The Lead With Beauty After Just 18 Seconds

The Championship side got off to a flyer against Aston Villa just seconds after the keeper had the ball.

The last thing any team want to do is be a goal down after not much time is on the clock, as soon as you're chasing the game with less than 10 minutes on the clock you've got an uphill struggle. So Steve Bruce would have been very annoyed on Saturday.

Who'd actually be a manager? How often must a gaffer give the instruction 'let's keep it tight at the back early on' be met with an early goal and the pulling of said managers hair out.

I even experienced it myself in a recent Sunday league game. Standing in for my mate who was on holiday I told his team to keep the league leaders at bay early and frustrate them- from our own kick off a pass back went very short and they were ahead after 30 seconds, there's not much you can do.

Not the moment I experienced but it might as well have been, we went on to lose 6-0 if you're wondering. Image: Grass Root Goals

So that being said it does fill me with some delight that even some of the most experienced managers around can see their teams behind after no time at all and that's exactly what happened to Steve Bruce on Saturday.

At least the Aston Villa manager hadn't seen his team kick off but Sheffield Wednesday did pass the ball back to their keeper before Adam Reach hit a lovely long range goal, all after just 18 seconds:

Things would get worse for Villa, who are still chasing promotion back to the Premier League after their poor first attempt last season, with Jordan Rhodes doubling Wednesday's lead after 23 minutes.

Chris Samba managed to pull a goal back but it didn't come until the 90+6th minute and by that time it was far too little, far too late and Wednesday ended a run of three away defeats in a row.

It was actually the first time that the Villans had suffered a home defeat in the league since April 15th and leaves them seven points off Wednesday's fierce rivals Sheffield United in the automatic promotion positions.

Don't worry Steve, I know how you feel!
