Max Arnold Scores Free Kick With Incredible Swerve

At first it looked like a deflection but instead Max Arnold has just bamboozled everyone with this shot!

Every now and again there's a moment in football that makes you watch it over and over again just so you can fully understand what just happened and Max Arnold's free kick for Wolfsburg on Saturday night falls into that category.

I can remember watching Roberto Carlos' free kick for Brazil against France in the 1997 Tournoi de France tournament and being in absolute awe of what I'd just seen because in my formative footballing years I'd never seen anything like it.

Arguably 21 years later and I've not seen much that comes close to the former Real Madrid left back's curling effort in the only international tournament England have won that anyone under the age of 52 was alive for.

Another Brazilian who could pull off the sublime, Ronaldinho, finally retired last week:

There has been other moments that have confused the hell out of me, whether it's watching Lionel Messi do Lionel Messi things or Joey Barton lose his mind against Manchester City.

But Max Arnold's free kick for Wolfsburg against Frankfurt on Saturday is the closest thing to utterly baffled I've been since Carlos. This free kick doesn't take a deflection, the side on view shows it's above the defender's head, but surely it does...

The goal halved Wolfsburg's deficit, making the score 2-1, but just a minute later the home team found themselves a man short after Landry Dimata's red card and Frankfurt went on to win 3-1.

Arnold though definitely stole the headlines!
