Angel Di Maria Scores Stunning Lobbed Goal In PSG's Rout Against Nice

Angel Di Maria Scores Stunning Lobbed Goal In PSG's Rout Against Nice

By Tom Sanders

Angel Di Maria scored a beautiful lobbed goal in Paris Saint-Germain's 4-1 victory over Nice in Ligue 1 on Friday night.

The Argentinian international scored twice at the Allianz Riviera in a routine win, opening the scoring in the 15th minute before his sublime lob six minutes later.

The former Man Utd winger broke the deadlock after a beautiful first-time pass from Icardi released him down the right flank, leaving him with ample time and space to bend the ball skillfully past Walter Benitez and into the bottom left corner.

His second goal was even better, though, to double PSG's lead in the south of France.

After a cross from Leandro Paredes played him into the box, Di Maria found the back of the net again with a dazzling first-touch lob from a tight angle.

It's the kind of split-second decision making and clinical finishing that we've come to expect from Di Maria, since he left Old Trafford yesterday, and he's currently in a scintillating run of form.

He was forced to step up and replace Neymar as PSG's main man on the wings after the Brazilian suffered more injury problems.

And after viewing last night's breathtaking display, Neymar might have a fight on his hands to regain his starting spot if the Argentinian keeps up this level of performance.

The two goals last night bring Di Maria's total tally for the season to seven, and it doesn't look like the 31-year old plans to slow down any time soon.

"I fed him the ball so he could tee somebody up. Nobody was in the middle, though, so his genius spoke instead," Thomas Meunier told reporters afterward about Di Maria.

"He always plays with great freedom when he can dictate the game. One moment, he is missing easy control, the next he is scoring this goal."

Although Nice tried their hardest to get back into the game following a goal from Ignatius Ganago, their hopes of getting anything from the match were effectively extinguished after Wylan Cyprien and Christophe Herelle were dismissed in the space of three minutes.

The win was then sealed with two additional goals from Mbappe and Icardi in the 88th and 91st minute, with the former making his return from a thigh injury with a low shot into the bottom right corner and Icardi continuing his hot streak with his third goal in three games.

But despite the chaotic nature of the match, it was clear that Di Maria was the star of the show.

PSG are now five points clear of second-placed Nantes, who hope to close the gap on Saturday with a trip to relegation-battlers Metz.
