It didn't take him long.

Wayne Rooney was on the Sky Sports' studio for Watford vs Chelsea on Monday Night Football tonight and he wasted no time ripping into Jamie Carragher, his former England colleague and regular rival over the years.

The Everton striker, following in the footsteps of the likes of John Terry and Slaven Bilic in stepping in for Gary Neville, was introduced by host David Jones and said, "I'm looking forward to it, it's good to be here".

Wayne Rooney's funniest tweets:

But then, in an instance, he proceeded to troll Carra, saying, "To be honest this is probably the closest Carra ever got to me", prompting chuckles in the studio.

Even if the comedic timing could be improved, it was a lovely little opening line from Rooney, taking a dig at his fellow scouser's difficulty in marking him in his career.

Here's how Twitter reacted:

As we know, the two Liverpudlians have MNF history together.

Towards the end of an interview after Rooney scored his 10th Premier League goal of the season, he mentioned that he'd seen a picture on social media of Carragher, Terry and David Jones posing on the Monday Night Football set.

Rooney then went onto say: "I've seen when you were in your casual gear. I have to say JT was looking OK but Carra your top was horrendous!"

As always, the main man Carragher was quick to reply and produced the best line of the night, saying: "A bit like your hairline!"

Is that 1-1 in verbal jousts between the two then?!
