The German World Cup winner has been made to bide his time on the bench for the Gunners this season, after starting the campaign injured and failing to win back his starting berth from compatriot Shkodran Mustafi.
However, when it comes to official appearances, being the club captain means Mertesacker is required to fill in when needed, and he appeared before the cameras today ahead of tomorrow's Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.
