Superstitions can play a big part in the lives of professional footballers and Borussia Dortmund's goalkeeper Roman Burki is no exception.

Ex- AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso was rumoured to read Russian philosopher Fyodor Dostoyevsky while he sat on the toilet before matches.

Former France skipper Laurent Blanc got in on the act too during his playing days, kissing the bald head of Fabien Barthez before each game of Les Bleus' triumphant World Cup campaign in 1998.

And while Burki's pre-match ritual might not be as far fetched as Gattuso's or Blanc's, it still makes for a fantastic watch.

The Switzerland international has developed his own bizarre superstition, where he has to touch the ball before the coin toss - with or without the referee's approval:

And it's fair to say Burki's ceremonial touch of the ball has brought his team good luck so far this season, with Dortmund currently sitting top of the Bundesliga, three points ahead of Bayern Munich. Although Burki hasn't been quite as lucky in the Champions League, with BVB slumping to back-to-back defeats against Tottenham and Real Madrid in their opening two group games.
