Troy Deeney helped beat Liverpool's defence up on Saturday afternoon but even before kick off the Watford striker had broken Virgil van Dijk's steely composure.

Watford captain Deeney ended the game against Jurgen Klopp's side with a goal and an assist for the Hornets as they beat the Premier League leaders 3-0, to hand them their first league defeat of the season.

However his work started before the game when he told a brilliant joke to the mascot who was walking with him onto the pitch in the tunnel, with Van Dijk struggling to stifle a laugh and referee Michael Oliver not bothering to hold back.

Despite coming up against a side who hadn't lost in 44 games in the league Deeney was clearly in a relaxed mood ahead of kick off.

However his demeanour on the pitch wasn't of someone taking things easy as he hassled and harried the Reds' defence, especially Dejan Lovren, and made life uncomfortable for them.

He had a chance at the end of the first half to make it 1-0 when Alisson managed to close him down in front of goal before he composed himself to put the ball over.

In the second half the former Walsall striker set up Ismaila Sarr for his second goal of the game with an inch perfect ball that beat the defence and set the speedy forward on his way through.

Deeney made it 3-0 when Sarr set him up with pass to the edge of the box that the striker curled past Alisson, who had come off his line, to hand Liverpool their first loss of the season.

Incredibly, as well as his current career as a footballer and a future career as a stand up comic, Deeney could make some money as a fortune teller.

After the loss to Manchester United the previous Sunday, the 31-year-old actually predicted that his side would beat Liverpool.
