He couldn't resist.

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier has aimed a dig at Liverpool following the news that Barcelona have had a £72 million bid for Philippe Coutinho knocked back by the Reds.

The Catalans have long been admirers of the Brazilian playmaker, and stepped up to their pursuit in the form of a bid.

Liverpool, like they have done in previous situations with Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez, have maintained that they are in no position to sell.

But Le Tissier, one of the all-time Premier League greats, has taken to Twitter to air his views on the topic, and believes the Anfield club should let their talisman leave for the Nou Camp - saying it would be the "right thing" to do so he doesn't have to go on strike to force a move- a little reference to the situation of Virgil van Dijk at Southampton.

The Tweet was never going to go down well with Liverpool fans, and resulted in 'Le Tiss' trending in the city because of the flurry of responses.

And the Sky Sports pundit, probably still a bit bitter about Liverpool nabbing a load of players from his beloved couldn't resist having a further couple of digs, including calling them a feeder club to Barcelona when one fan said the same thing regarding Saints and their record of selling players to the Reds.

But his best bit of banter came when he said Liverpool weren't a big club, after one Twitter user told him no big clubs tried to sign him in his playing career.

The one-club man agreed, cheekily excluding the five-time European Cup winners from 'the big club party' by informing the fan that he turned them down back in the day.

Coutinho, meanwhile, has unfazed by interest from Barcelona in the Premier League Asia Trophy final against Leicester in Hong Kong yesterday.

First, he threaded through a glorious pass for Mohamed Salah to level the scores, before scoring the winning goal with a trademark strike from the edge of the box.
