It Might be A New Year But It's The Same Old Phil Jones

It Might be A New Year But It's The Same Old Phil Jones

The Manchester United defender showed off his usual skills as the Premier League side beat Championship Reading in the FA Cup.

Manchester United made harder work of Championship Reading in the FA Cup than they would have liked but at least centre back Phil Jones was able to show off the best of his skills.

For as good as Sir Alex Ferguson was, and he was bloody brilliant, it's worth remembering that he once said that Phil Jones could be the greatest player in the club's history, better than Duncan Edwards.

It's fair to say that if anything could make the legendary Scot's face even redder it is that suggestion, with the former Blackburn Rovers youngster never fulfilling the potential he showed on his famous Premier League debut against Chelsea in 2009.

There's many Manchester United fans who would wonder how, despite all the money spent over the years, the 26 year old is still with the team.

He once again started in the FA Cup third round game against Reading early on Saturday afternoon as United were run more ragged than they'd have hoped, or expected against the struggling Championship side.

But despite the likes of Fred, Andreas Perriera and Alexis Sanchez not being able to fully show off their skills, Jones was able to go peak Jones.

United's defending has been their weak part this season, despite the complete lack of goals as well, and they've been desperate for a new centre back recently.

With Chris Smalling having recently signed a new deal and Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof improving it feels like Jones won't be at Old Trafford for much longer.

For everyone's amusement that will be a shame.

Long live the gurning prince!
