28 Years Ago Today 'Shat On Lineker' Was Born

28 Years Ago Today 'Shat On Lineker' Was Born

Nearly three decades on and the Match of the Day host can't get away what he did at the 1990 World Cup.

The World Cup is full of some amazing and magical moments all the way through its history but for all of those one moment is talked about more on Twitter than any other, the time in 1990 that Gary Lineker soiled himself.

Gary Lineker is best known these days for his wonderful presenting. Whether it's Match of the Day or the World Cup on BBC or the Champions League for BT there's not many better than Lineker.

Because football only started in the Premier League era in 1992 it's very easy for the younger generation to not be told often enough just how good a footballer he was.

Lineker won the Golden Boot at the World Cup in 1986 where he scored six goals as England made the quarter finals before Diego Maradona's hand and blistering goal sent them packing.

The former Spurs and Everton forward went on to score another four goals as England reached the semi finals four years later, imagine Gareth Southgate's side getting that far now.

However the thing that gets brought up about Lineker more than anything else from the 1990 tournament is from the opening game against Republic of Ireland.

During that game the striker felt ill and soiled himself during the game, wiping it on the pitch after doing his business:

It became the stuff of legend despite the fact it was never confirmed that he had actually pooed on the pitch and just his very strange actions to suggest it.

However in an interview on his 50th birthday in 2010 to BBC the Match of the Day front man admitted to the deed, saying, "I was not very well, I was poorly at half time but I carried on.

"The ball went down the left hand side, I did try to tackle someone, I stretched and then I relaxed myself. I was very fortunate it rained that night and I could do something about it. It was messy, it just came out, it happened. How much detail do you want?

"It's true; it was the opening game of the 1990 World Cup against the Republic of Ireland. You can see me rubbing the ground like a dog; it was the most horrendous experience of my life, but I tell you I never found so much space in a game than I did that night after that happened."

Lineker had scored in the game to put England 1-0 up before Kevin Sheedy equalised late on with the game finishing 1-1.

In the day of social media it became a 'hilarious' trend to reply to everything he tweeted with the phrase 'shat on' prefacing what he said.

'That was a good goal'

'Shat on goal'

How did they come up with that?

Still Gary we love you for all your goals and your presenting. We can let you off an embarrassing shitting story, after all we've all got one!
