Poundland Criticised For T-shirt That Encourages Referee Abuse

The men in black come in for a lot of abuse and scrutiny and the high street store are coming in for similar after their t-shirt.

Football fans have been known to throw a bit of abuse in the direction of referees but there's always campaigns to reduce it, especially at grass roots level, so there's no surprise that Poundland have been met with a backlash from their new t-shirt.

The World Cup is just one week away and you can be sure, especially with the introduction of VAR, that at some point they'll be a discussion about a referee's decision.

If you wonder if VAR will lead to confusion during the games just remember in 2014 when goal line technology was used for the first time and Jonathan Pearce's infamous meltdown when Karim Benzema scored against Honduras.

Despite new technology referees' lives have never been easy and with increased social media scrutiny it only becomes even more difficult for the men in black.

The last thing they probably need is high street shops turning on them and producing t-shirts asking if they're blind. But that's exactly what Poundland have done but people aren't happy:

Does the Respect campaign mean nothing to these people?!

Of course referees are going to continue to make mistakes and as football fans we're likely to pour all over them and criticise the men making the wrong decisions but we've all got to be careful not to abuse refs.

Without the men in the middle we won't have a sport to love.
