There's no doubt in my mind that football needs VAR but what it certainly needs is officials that can do their jobs properly. Fans were astounded that the referee and linesman missed just how far Keylor Navas was off his line.
The argument over video technology will run and run for many a year yet. The idea of VAR is to reduce the amount of horrific decisions that refs and their assistants make, rather than the 50/50 ones that could go either way.
Of course referees could always start by knowing the rules in the first place.
On Sunday night Real Madrid took on Celta Vigo hoping to close the gap on league leaders Barcelona. Los Blancos went 1-0 down before turning it around to lead 2-1 by half-time.
In the second half Celta Vigo had the chance to equalise from the spot but Keylor Navas save denied them a goal but fans couldn't believe it wasn't retaken after the keeper was clearly off his line when it was taken:
Navas was closer to the penalty spot than the goal line when that kick was taken. Terrible officiating #CeltaRealMadrid- :wind_blowing_face:R4 (@remivxx) January 7, 2018
Navas a good 5 yards off his line on that penalty. Will never be called.- TortiousTroll (@TortiousTroll) January 7, 2018
That Celta penalty should've been repeated. Navas was way off his line.- Josip (@jperkovic93) January 7, 2018
Navas was so far off his line for that penalty, hardly surprising he's denied Aspas from the spot.- Liam Headd (@LiamHeadd) January 7, 2018
Navas was 100km off his line before that penalty was taken bruh- Ziggy (@flowwriter360) January 7, 2018
What has happened to the rule where a keeper isn't allowed off his line on a penalty? Navas was literally closer to the 6 yard line than his goal line for that penalty :joy:- corey (@CoreyClift_) January 7, 2018
Keylor Navas was definitely 2 yards off his line before Aspas kicked the ball. That penalty should have been retaken #CeltaMadrid- RuthiLex (@Lexieruthie) January 7, 2018
Wtf was the point in the linesman watching the penalty - Navas was at least 2 yards off his line- Culester (@_Barcauk) January 7, 2018
Celta were lucky that Gómez González was able to grab an equaliser late in the game and the 2-2 draw means Real are now 16 points behind league leaders Barcelona with a game in hand.
Navas gave away a penalty and despite reprieving himself with the save his future at the Bernabeu is questionable with Real reportedly close to signing Athletico Bilbao goalie Kepa.
