Manchester City's failing Premier League title defence took a few twists in quick succession on Friday evening as they had goalkeeper Ederson sent off before opening the scoring against Wolves.

Before kick off City were 14 points behind leaders Liverpool and in need of a win against Wolves, who beat them at the Etihad earlier in the season, to have any chance of keeping their title hopes alive.

Their chances took a hit after just 12 minutes when Ederson took out Diogo Jota outside the area and earned himself a red card.

That meant taking an outfield player off for back up goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, although some suggested putting Kyle Walker in net after his clean sheet in the Champions League earlier in the season.

Sergio Aguero, starting his first game since first match since the end of November, due to injury, was the unfortunate player to make way for Bravo.

The match took another turn just 13 minutes later when Riyad Mahrez looked to have been tripped in the box by Leander Dendoncker but the referee failed to point to the spot.

VAR easily overturned the decision and Raheem Sterling had the chance to make it 1-0 from the spot, only for Rui Patricio to guess correctly and save the shot.

However the drama didn't end there as Wolves' defenders were adjudged to have encroached on the area and the referee ordered a retake, which Sterling scored.

Liverpool's win over second place Leicester on Thursday means they've started the season with 17 wins from their opening 18 games, having only dropped points in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

A win for City against Wolves will reduce the gap to 11 points but the Reds would have a game in hand and they look unlikely to drop many points right now.

Guardiola and his team know they may need to win every game to have any chance of winning the league for a third year in-a-row, they won't be helped by Ederson's suspension.
