Ed Woodward's house was attacked by Manchester United fans on Tuesday night, after years of criticism aimed at the executive vice-chairman, but one fan has questioned how legitimate the attack was.

Woodward has been in charge of transfers at United since the summer of 2013 which has coincided with the team falling from the top of the table.

On Tuesday night fans were recorded firing flares at the executive vice-chairman's house, though he and his family were out, in an attack that has been condemned by everyone.

One fan has come up with an interesting conspiracy theory, with Woodward having recently appointed a PR firm, to suggest it was planned by his own people.

In recent times there has been stories about the songs that United fans sing about Woodward, with some calling for him to die, and positive stories about his work for the club.

It would be deeply cynical to imagine that the story of the attack could have been set up by his PR team but then it's not beyond the realms of possibility either.

The timing of the attack is ironic with the Premier League side on the verge of signing Bruno Fernandes from Sporting, after an agreement between the two clubs was reached.

The midfielder has been linked with the move since last summer but it seems to have taken a report about a bid from Barcelona to spring Woodward into reaching the fee the Portuguese side were always looking for.
